‘Future Nurse Travel’ A-Z

This is Jackelyn Gomez, and I'd like to share my story with you. I am honored to have more than four generations of nurses and doctors in my family history. Being a nurse, according to my great-grandmother, awakens a new human sensibility. I have been inspired and driven to pursue my dream of becoming a great nurse by my family, ever since I was a young child, I have witnessed firsthand how they have all looked out for each other and anyone else in need of love, support, and health.

I was born in the state of Kansas, and when I was three days old, my parents mobile home trailer was destroyed by a tornado. The bedroom my parents and I were in was the only room that survived in the ground. Thanks to God we survived that catastrophe. My family has also told me and I also know that God has a mission for me here in the world, since I have so much to offer humanity. My parents were also blessed with two additional younger brothers who have learning disabilities and muscular dystrophy. I was raised to appreciate life, health, and family because I witnessed my parents' struggles with my brothers at a very young age.

I was raised and went to school in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Due to my father's legal immigration status, he has not been able to make arrangements due to lack of money, but my mother, one of my family's greatest warriors, has always made it feasible for our family to stay together while upholding family values and having faith in God as well. I am happy that I grew up in Mexico, because I was able to see my entire family supporting each other, since they helped each other out and enabled us to pursue careers as nurses and doctors. Because of that, I was also able to witness the commitment and work required to attend school and become anything you want to be.

I currently live with my mother, my brothers and my grandparents who came to live with us, to support my mother financially. For my expenses, I decided to help my mother by working as a cashier at Walmart, and I have always liked to work and help my family because I know it is not easy and that has helped me feel proud of myself and that they are proud of me as well because my parents know they can always count on me for help.

With the support of my parents, I was able to graduate from high school at the age of sixteen and I really want to continue with school to improve myself. My dream is to be a doctor, but I know that it is a very long and expensive career, but I have to start as a nurse to be able to start generating money to continue progressing with my career as a nurse because we are low-income, and I know that even now I will not let that get in my way to succeed in my future career. If you grant me this chance, I want to take full use of it to prove to you that I am capable of succeeding. In addition, I will be incredibly appreciative of this wonderful opportunity.

Sincerely,

- Jackelyn Gomez

Dear Empowered Health Academy

My name is Kimora Smith. As a kid I knew I wanted to become a Registered Nurse, but I did not know exactly why I wanted to become a Registered Nurse. I just had a feeling and a vision. In middle school during career day, I dressed up as a registered nurse. I had on scrubs and wore a stethoscope; not knowing that this would be my long term career goal. Most children change what they want to be in life when they age, but not me. I knew I wanted to be a nurse then and I know I want to be a nurse now.

Both my mom and grandmother motivates me to become a RN. Both of them showed me the meaning of being a hard worker, which consists of being dedicated, patient, and consistent. When I moved to Sacramento I found the answer to my question regarding why I wanted to become a RN. My paternal grandmother was a nurse who cared for and owned a Family InHome Care facility. She cared for disabled adults in her home and she allowed me to help her with them. When my grandmother got sick, I helped her the best way I knew how too. I was there for her, I listened to her reminisce, we laughed and joked, I made her comfortable, and I helped her with anything she needed help with, as much as I could, because I was still in high school. But when she was sick I didn't have the medical knowledge to really treat her. When my grandmother passed away, I was heartbroken. But her passing made me even more passionate about nursing and answered my question of "why" I wanted to become a registered nurse. I want to become a registered nurse because I want to be able to give my patients more care and treatment than I was able to give my grandmother when she was sick.

My short term career goal is to earn my Associates and or Bachelors Degree in Nursing. Currently, I am finishing up my nursing prerequisites this semester, in the fall I will be applying to nursing programs. My long term goal is to earn my Master's Degree so that I can teach as a Clinical Instructor. I am currently an Anatomy & Physiology Tutor. I believe tutoring students will benefit me when I do become a Clinical Instructor. Ever since I knew I wanted to become a N, I have been dedicated and determined to make that happen. I will do anything that will benefit me in my pathway of becoming a RN which is why I want to join Empowered Health Academy. I will be a valuable addition to the program because I know what I want and I know that I will become that, but to have experienced nurses support me and guide me through my nursing journey will be extremely valuable to me. When I become a Registered Nurse I would love to be a mentor and help pre-nursing and or nursing students through their journey like people helped me. I would like to give back to the Empowered Academy Program once I do get RN after my name.

Respectfully,

- Kimora Smith

To the Empowered Health Academy,

This letter is sent to whom this may concern.

My name is Annalyse Rodriguez, I am 18 years old and I come from a hispanic heritage. I am an early graduate from Sem Yeto Satellite in Fairfield Ca, where I currently reside. At the moment I am unemployed but still searching for jobs that demonstrate the skills and provide benefits for the career path that I am trying to pursue. Growing up I've seen different health environments and have been in situations at a young age that have changed my perspectives of being a health provider. I have no certified experience or background in the medical field but have volunteered to help people in need during natural disasters or tragic situations that had caused them to be left with nothing. I also have experience of being around older people in group homes and day programs that cater to people who have disabilities such as down syndrome and different varieties of autism and have learned the basic needs of how to take care of such person.

Since I’ve graduated, I’ve thought about what I would want to do in life and how my life can impact others. With the current state of the world, it would mean more to me to have an impact by becoming a healthcare provider as I know there is a shortage. I tend to think about the next generation, and how there is lack of wanting to be something more than a next influencer or just working for the money but not enjoying their job and that’s not what I want for the rest of my life. I don’t want work because I’m forced to work,I want to be able to work because I love to work and if given the chance to work in the healthcare field, seeing a smile on somebody’s face every day and knowing that I could have been the reason for that smile makes me feel like I’ve done something good even if it’s just for own person. Since covid I’ve seen the major decline in the healthcare system. More recently in 2022 when I lost my father, I seen the difference of when someone chooses a career for the money and when they are in a career to make a difference. I believe he wasn’t given the proper treatment, and if somebody had paid attention and had not dismissed his health issues he would still be here today. Since that day I wanted to make a change for the people that are in the same positions like my dad where they had nurses who mistreated them and didn’t take their sicknesses into account when they were on the clock. It had been expressed to me on many occasions that it feels embarrassing having to depend on people, especially when these people have attitudes and make you feel worse by asking them to do their job. I want people to be able to remember me and be able to say they had the best nurse care for them and not once did they feel like they had to be embarrassed that they were sick.

This opportunity will not be taken lightly, I will become a nurse no matter how long it takes. Not only have I’ve been told by others that have a natural instinct for helping people I feel it myself that this is where I’m supposed to be, especially after tough situations that I’ve been in.

- Annalyse Guiterrez
